DreamHost Questions, Answered!

  1. How many WordPress websites can I install on a DreamHost account?

You can install as many WordPress websites as you like on a DreamHost account.

Because they give you unlimited storage and databases, you can set up as many sites as you want!

  2. What do I get in a DreamHost account?

You get unlimited storage and unlimited databases. This means you can easily create as many sites you want to without worrying about being charged "extras" like some other hosting companies do.

You can also host unlimited domains at DreamHost (you'll still need to register them) and also have unlimited email addresses that you can set up with your domains.

For more information, have a look at "What's Included" in a DreamHost package (opens new window) [aff].

  3. How easy is it to install WordPress on a DreamHost account?

Since I recorded the video tutorial, DreamHost have actually improved their "one click" install of WordPress. Their "one click" install really does mean "one click" (unless you really want to configure things yourself!)

Unlike other hosting companies, DreamHost don't use "Fantastico Scripts" and have created their own user panel. There's no need to worry about understanding mySQL databases, admin rights, configuring WordPress or any of those things. With DreamHost, they've already set it up for you - you just click the button and wait a few minutes for WordPress to be installed!

  4. Will DreamHost pay me if I recommend them? If so, how much?

Yes. Assuming you do it correctly! You'll need to use a special "affiliate" link, so that they can track who sent a new client to them. If you use your special "DreamHost Rewards" link properly, then yes - they'll either pay you a one time $97 commission or a recurring 10% of the referral purchase with DreamHost. Which way you get paid is up to you!

Have a look at the tutorial I've created a showing you how you can earn $97 for recommending DreamHost.

  5. What's the DreamHost customer service like?

Having experienced quite a lot of different hosting companies, I love the support I've received from DreamHost. I've personally found them to be very helpful and have helped me with a lot of technical issues.

In the past, I've had really quite unpleasant experiences from other hosting companies. The standard reply I've encountered is "sorry, we don't support the application your using - you'll have to work it out yourself". That's really unhelpful and I've ended up spending hours trying to solve an issue myself. Think about it - *I'm* technically minded - if I take several hours finding a solution, then most first time users don't stand a chance!

The experience I've had of DreamHost has actually been fantastic. I like their support staff as more often than not, they tend to go the extra mile and try and help you out if they can.

My favourite example is their WordPress support. While, like any other hosting company, they don't officially support "third party applications" (like WordPress), I usually find that my WordPress related questions are handled by guys who actually use WordPress and know quite a lot about it. Over the years, the DreamHost support staff have even pointed me to some really cool WordPress plugins that I still use to this day!

It's rare to get good customer service. This is really why I recommend them over other hosting companies.

  6. Is DreamHost ecologically friendly? Are they Green?

Yes. They are - they make every effort to reduce their emissions... they're carbon neutral.

Take a look at what they have to say about DreamHost's commitment to being carbon neutral.

  7. Can I try DreamHost before I buy an account with them?

Yes. In fact, you get 2 weeks free hosting before they'll charge your credit card.

Check out the DreamHost 97 day money back guarantee (opens new window) [aff]. If at any time during that period you find that they're not for you, then just get your money back.

  8. What's the best thing about DreamHost?

This may sound weird... but I like them because they're "human" and (also have a sense of humour. See the website images!)

Unlike other hosting companies, I find that these guys (and gals) are really helpful in their emails and actually come across as real people. They're not just mindless drones working in a job they hate. You get the sense that they like what they do... well, that's what I've found!

  9. I'd like to get an account but find all the technical jargon confusing during sign-up! What should I do?

Yeah, this is probably the one down-side about DreamHost - quite a lot of people get stuck trying to sign-up for an account with them...

Why? Because of all the jargon and trying to sell you stuff you have no idea about (or need!).

The general rule of thumb is: if you don't understand what it is they're selling you - leave the checkbox alone! (e.g. You probably don't know what a VPS is, so don't bother with it! Skip it... move along!)

  10. Will my site experience any downtime at DreamHost?

Like all hosting companies, I'll admit that DreamHost aren't perfect. Yes, they do sometimes have downtime - although that's to be expected on *any* "shared hosting" package.

Let's face it - if you have a site that makes you an automated income and you worry about a few hours of downtime affecting the revenue of your business, then you've not invested properly into the technology you use. If you're losing millions, then you should consider getting dedicated hosting and your own server instead of "shared hosting"!

Most people will find that DreamHost will do the job as well as any other hosting company that provides a shared hosting package.

  11. Can my WordPress website be hacked on a DreamHost account?

Yes it can... but only if you let it happen!

Like any other hosting company, the responsibility for ensuring that your WordPress site is up to date and properly protected lies with YOU!

The sad reality is that, like any application connected to the internet, WordPress can be hacked. If you don't spend time maintaining and upgrading your site, then hackers may uncover holes in certain versions. Thankfully, the guys over at WordPress address these security issues and provide free upgrades from time to time. Better than that, upgrade are very simple to do - you just click on a link to upgrade!

The other way that a WordPress site gets hacked is through weak Administration passwords. I'd recommend using a random string of characters to ensure that no-one can guess your password!

Like I say, be *responsible* for YOUR site!
